Pityriasis Rosea in Columbus, OH

An itchy red patch of skin may be a sign of pityriasis rosea, a skin condition that can be treated at Downtown Dermatology. Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Shari Hicks-Graham specializes in pityriasis treatments for children, teenagers and adults in the Greater Columbus area.

What is Pityriasis Rosea?

Pityriasis rosea is not well understood in the medical community, but some research indicates that it may be linked to a viral infection. The condition is not contagious. The discoloration usually starts as an oval or circle that measures up to four inches. Known as a “herald spot,” the redness then spreads outward as tiny dots in a pattern that is similar to tree branches. In some cases, the condition resolves after 10 weeks, but some people require treatment to reduce the symptoms and avoid complications.

Pityriasis Rosea Treatment Benefits

Treatment for pityriasis rosea will address the symptoms of the condition, such as:

  • Scaly skin
  • Mild to severe itching
  • Permanent discoloration on people with darker skin

What Areas Can Be Treated for Pityriasis Rosea?

Pityriasis rosea occurs on the:

  • Abdomen
  • Back
  • Chest

The herald patch usually begins in the center of these areas and then spreads out across both sides of the body.

What Can I Expect From Pityriasis Rosea Treatment?

Dr. Hicks-Graham will recommend medications or light therapy for your pityriasis rosea. The medications may include:

  • Antiviral drugs
  • Antihistamines

If you are not responsive to the medications or prefer not to take them, light therapy has proven effective, but it may not be covered by your insurance. Light therapy will clear the rash, but the treatments may leave permanent dark spots on your skin.
