Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy in Columbus, Ohio

Sclerotherapy is a medical treatment for varicose veins, spider veins, and broken blood vessels. As part of our cosmetic dermatology services, Downtown Dermatology offers sclerotherapy to men and women in the Greater Columbus area.

What is Sclerotherapy?

Blood vessels are damaged by trauma or a problem with circulation where the blood pools in veins. The pooling of the blood weakens the walls of the veins. Sclerotherapy is a medical treatment for varicose veins, spider veins, and broken blood vessels. The treatment works by destroying the blood vessels, which are then absorbed by your body. Blood circulation is re-routed through healthier veins.

Sclerotherapy Benefits

Sclerotherapy is preferred by Dr. Hicks-Graham because the treatment:

  • Produces less tissue trauma compared to vein stripping and other traditional treatments
  • Is minimally invasive
  • Has a short recovery period

Where Sclerotherapy Be Applied?

Varicose veins, spider veins, and broken blood vessels can develop on any part of the face or body.

How is Sclerotherapy Administered?

The solution for sclerotherapy is injected with a small needle. Dr. Hicks-Graham may apply a topical numbing agent to the skin to ensure your comfort. The solution inflames the walls of the veins, which then stick together. Over time, the vein dies and is absorbed by the body.

Sclerotherapy Preparation

Dr. Hicks-Graham may recommend diagnostic tests to determine the underlying cause of your varicose veins, spider veins, and broken blood vessels. In some cases, the veins burst due to:

  • Professions that require long periods of standing
  • Trauma to the vein
  • Problems with blood circulation
  • Medical conditions, such as diabetes

Sclerotherapy Recovery

Dr. Hicks-Graham will discuss your recovery period during the consultation. You will need to wear a compression bandage on the area to promote healing. She may also require you to rest at home and limit your activities for up to one week.

How Much Does Sclerotherapy Cost?

Sclerotherapy can be performed for medical and cosmetic purposes. If Dr. Hicks-Graham determines that the treatment is clinically necessary, a portion of the cost may be covered by your medical insurance. You may pay for your portion of the cost via cash, check, major credit card and CareCredit® financing.

Is Sclerotherapy Right for Me?

As a board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Hicks-Graham is uniquely qualified to determine if sclerotherapy is right for you. She will review your medical history and examine your varicose veins, spider veins, and broken blood vessels. She will then advise you about the likelihood of correcting the unhealthy veins with sclerotherapy.
